Henry Messer Award for Advocacy in Neurosurgery

Dr. Henry D. Messer (1927–2014) was a member of the neurosurgical community and advocate who contributed to increased awareness and support for LGBTQ+ physicians. He practiced as an openly gay neurosurgeon during a time when this was uncommon, demonstrating courage and a strong commitment to supporting professional opportunity and participation for individuals across a broad range of backgrounds within medicine.

This award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated sustained contributions to the professional development, mentorship, and advancement of individuals from underrepresented backgrounds within neurosurgery. Contributions may include research, education, mentorship, community engagement, or advocacy that strengthens and supports continued growth of the specialty.
