Carole Ann Miller, MD
Dr. Carole Miller was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree with Honors in History at the Ohio State University, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She remained at that institution for her medical degree in 1966. At Ohio State, she was elected to membership in Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr. Miller served her internship at the Graduate Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where she received the Best Intern Award. She then returned to Ohio State for her residency in neurological surgery, which she completed in 1971 with a research fellowship at Yale New Haven Hospitals.
Following residency, Dr. Miller joined the faculty of neurosurgery at the University of Michigan as the first woman on the surgical faculty. In 1975, she returned to Ohio State as Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate Professor (with tenure) in 1980. She became Clinical Professor in 1990.
Dr. Miller was board certified in 1975, the fourth woman to become a Diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery.
Dr. Miller has numerous research interests, and has published over 60 articles on a variety of neurosurgical topics, including smooth muscle physiology, vasospasm as related to aneurysmorrhaphy, cerebellar neurophysiology, spinal cord stimulation, peripheral nerve regeneration, and spinal trauma. She currently conducts an active clinical practice and continues clinical research in thoracolumbar trauma and magnetic resonance imaging of the spine. She has been a Visiting Professor at several academic institutions.
Dr. Miller has held several leadership roles in neurosurgery. In 1989, she was President of the Ohio State Neurosurgical Society. In 1991, she was elected Chairman of the Joint AANS/CNS Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves. She is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. In 1987, she was a guest examiner for the American Board of Neurological Surgeons, the first woman neurosurgeon to serve in this capacity. In 1988, she was elected to the Society of Neurological Surgeons. In 1988-1989, she was Acting director of the Division of Neurologic Surgery at the Ohio State University Hospitals. Dr. Miller is currently in her second term as appointed representative of the AANS to the Advisory Council for Neurological Surgery of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Miller was elected the first female neurosurgeon in the senior society of neurosurgeons where she continues to serve.
